We just covered, “owned media” in class, so you know how important it can be for a company or for your career.
While you can get by with Facebook, Tumblr, Linked-in, etc., there is nothing like having your own webpage blog. Given that, the easiest way to get started is with WordPress.com. It is a free site that offers an open-source blogging (CMS) called wordpress.
There are a series of instructional videos available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viJtONW8Plg&feature=player_detailpage&list=PL9478A91370624E9F#t=0 that will teach you everything you need to have a great website.
At some point, you may need more flexibility, email capabilities and monetization options. When that happens, you can migrate to wordpress.org and a paid hosting site.
Best wishes, John Ireland
